Personal hygiene is a very important factor for a healthy life. For growing children, personal hygiene is very important. It doesn’t only make them comfortable but it also teaches them to do what is right at an early stage. Early hygiene enhancement gives the child a more healthy and comfortable life and will learn to be hygienic up to the time the child grows old.

To teach children hygiene, start from yourself. Set an example for the children to follow. Do not teach children about hygiene when you yourself looks messy. Always teach something to children that you yourself are an example. Make yourself clean and practice personal hygiene so that the children will follow you. Children imitate what they see around them and the person teaching must make sure that she has something to show them.

Teach the children to always wash their hands before and after handling their food. Let them see you wash hands before and after eating. In school, children are taught personal hygiene in Science class. But for small children who are still in preparatory school who have no

science subject, they are taught the actual personal hygiene. Children are made to go to the washroom and wash hands with soap and water before handling their food. After eating, they are also taught to wash their hands before going back to the classroom for their class activities.

It is also good to show the children some pictures of correct personal hygiene. Children appreciate beautiful pictures and the things they see in pictures are easily painted in their minds. Show them pictures of children washing their hands, their face, trimming nails, taking a bath and combing their hair. You will notice that when children are shown pictures, they react immediately and tell you about what they do at home. They easily associate their activities to that of the pictures.

In order for children to understand more about personal hygiene, they must be made to understand what personal hygiene is all about. Children will learn more by understanding first what is being taught to them.

At home, children could be taught personal hygiene through your example. When you wake up in the morning, show them that you wash your face and brush your teeth. When you handle food, show them that you always wash your hands with soap and water. Teach them too not to use their clothes to wipe their nose and hands. Tell them that the hand towel is there for wiping the hands. Explain to your children that they should take a bath everyday and make them understand the benefits they get from practicing personal hygiene.

Children should know that by practicing personal hygiene, they become healthy and have a more comfortable life.
